Sonnet for Manchester 2017

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Those children of the North for whom we grieved,

Whose gift of life was cruelly rendered void,

By evil, twisted beings who believed,

That Love and Light and Life should be destroyed.

Their diabolic ethos paid no heed,

To lamentation, suffering or despair,

Their dark beliefs and doctrines fuelled their need,

To kill the loving heart that brims with care.

Such mindsets simply cannot synchronise,

With the voice of reason or compassion

Dire pleas for pity, shrill demented cries

Meet with cold detachment and dispassion .

To obviate these evils far and wide

Let passion, joy and beauty be your guide.

Maggie Smart

I wrote this poem in May 2017, when an extremist suicide bomber killed 23 people, including himself, outside the Manchester Arena.
