Actually, it's supposed to be really nice in Rwanda at this time of year and simply anyone who is anyone, vists there. The refugees will absolutely love it. It's practically 'home from home.'

SURELY NOT RWANDA

To Where? Rwanda? Really?

This is surely a massive wind-up,

But it seems that Dear Leader has sanctioned it,

And all his toadies have signed up.

Many consider this strategy

Was conceived in the depths of hell,

And it’s easy to spot the sinister hand,

Of the ruthless Priti Patel.

She’d identified Rwanda

As an ideal place to be,

If you are a poor, downtrodden,

Homeless refugee.

It’s a forward-looking country,

Free of ethnic tension,

No civil wars, no genocide

No political dissention.

Oh – and that insignificant business,

Back in the nineties, which …

Involved the Tutsis and Hutus,

Was merely a minor glitch.

And fulsome praise has now been heaped

On this controversial plan,

By the selfless, compassionate J. Rees Mogg,

A very worthy man.

As defender of this insane scheme,

He’s sought to seek attention,

By likening it to the holy, Easter

Story of Redemption.

So, it’s off to Central Africa,

For the hapless refugee,

It’s either that, or Priti Patel

Will cast him back in the sea.

PARTIES

Parties? What parties? Ohhhh …… those parties. Well, the thing is, old fruit, They weren’t parties …… as such, I mean, there was no alcohol or savoury snacks, At least, … not very much.

The odd few bottles of Merlot, a case of Chardonnay, A couple of kegs of beer, left over from New Years Day, Some sausage rolls, some cheesy bites, in no sense of the word, could this have been labelled, ‘ party food,’ why, that would have been absurd.

A simple workday meeting – yet someone’s involved the police, Which means that poor Dear Leader gets not a moment’s peace. Meanwhile , until the air has cleared and the status quo’s resumed, This trivia must be buried and nevermore exhumed.

To ensure it won’t be subject to the Statute of Limitations. We’ve recently had a shake up of Parliament’s foundations. And revised some very outdated laws, by making a few small tweaks, So the Statute of Limitations now runs at seven weeks.

When told we couldn’t do this, we did it anyway So, ‘Do not do as I do, just do as I say. ‘

Dear Pat,

You were arguably my oldest friend, inasmuch as I knew you longer than the rest of them.

You were one of the best of them.

We first met at St Andrew’s School, Totteridge, as I remember.

It was 1957 and you were already there, when I joined in the September.

I hold a picture of you in my mind as the 8 year old child that you were,

Blonde hair, blue eyes, very softly spoken. The rest is mostly a blur.

I got the impression that you were somewhat reserved and a little shy,

That is, until I spotted a Machiavellian twinkle in your eye.

The mischievous twinkle flickered constantly throughout our youth,

It usually heralded fun and laughter, but to tell the truth,

It could also erupt in flames at anything you perceived as unfair,

You never flinched from speaking out, you really seemed to care.

We attended the same secondary school, Queen Elizabeth’s, or QEGGS as it was known.

And that disarming twinkle flourished, as you came into your own.

That, and your commitment to helping others, propelled you into the community

Where you served the Guides and Scouting movements, whenever you had the opportunity.

On leaving school, promises to meet up were included in our annual Christmas greeting.

But it was over fifty years before we finally made that meeting.

What had we done? Where had we been? How did we lose touch?

Well, husbands, jobs, and three sons each, explained it pretty much …

When we met this last time, you were cheerful and serene

The joy you radiated, proved how happy you had been.

I can close my eyes now, and don’t even have to try,

To see that blue-eyed, blonde girl, with a twinkle in her eye.

Love from Maggie
